My Friend Sean is going to London, I'm jealous, so here's some Oasis.

So this week's song for Soundtrack of My Life is Wonderwall by Oasis. What a great song written by Noel Gallagher. Released in 1995 off of the album (What's the Story)Morning Glory? this song was voted #1 best British song of all time in a poll conducted by Virgin Radio. U2's guitarist The Edge has said this is a song he wishes he had written.
Ditto.
One of the cool things about this song is that Ryan Adams covered it, and his version so heavily influenced Gallagher, that Gallagher performs it live now in the style of Ryan Adams - not the way he originally wrote and performed it. My friend +Sean Keenan introduced me to Ryan Adams one night after a delicious dinner and during an impromptu jam session. Of course I will be forever grateful because Ryan Adams is now one of my favorite contemporary artists.
I decided to cover it the old fashioned way though because it is the version that was so meaningful to me.
I was living in London when this song was released. It was a HUGE hit in the UK. It was played everywhere and yet, I never tired of it. The beauty of this song and the fragility of the Gallagher brothers' relationship really made Oasis a band everyone was watching.  Even now, their dynamic is fascinating. My friend Sean is going to London and will get to rub elbows with the Gallaghers...................AAAGH! SO JEALOUS! Where's my +1 Sean?????????
So while he is off galavanting around London having tea and feeding pigeons at Trafalgar Square, my friend David Feldstein and I filmed this feel good cover at David's house. David and his wife Stacey were kind enough to let me use their cool music room to film since the guys at Down Fenix Media (www.downfenix.com) have been slammed at work and were unable to film.
Hope you enjoy our cover and as always - if you do like it - please hit the thumbs up button, share, tweet, and subscribe if you haven't already! Songs with the most likes will be released on iTunes so make sure you "like" your favorites so I know which ones you want to hear!

Building a Mystery is the Perfect Song for Soundtrack of My Life

Week #12 for Soundtrack of My Life is Building a Mystery by Sarah McLachlan. Blair Clarkson Wellington introduced me to McLachlan during one of her visits to UGA. Blair and I had been in show-choir together (jazz hands!) and she has a beautiful soprano voice which sounded really great next to my gritty alto. She was the Emily to my Amy on countless road trips where the Indigo Girls were required listening and singing.
So, the first time I heard the album Surfacing I was in awe. The contrast of McLachlan's delicate voice singing  lyrics like, "a beautiful fucked up man" was fabulous. (You might remember the radio version saying "a beautiful but strange man.") It was also an intimidating album to sing to because her voice is so different from mine. I've never had the balls to sing McLachlan publicly - until now! I hope you enjoy it. And when you do, share, share share!!! Help me out :)
While I love almost all of her songs, this one is particularly perfect for Soundtrack of My Life because the song is about putting up a facade to hide our insecurities. McLachlan has said,"if we just be who we are, that's usually the more attractive and beautiful thing." The thing is, it's terrifying to be who you are and then put it out to the world to judge. Yet, that's exactly the risk I am taking with this project by not auto-tuning or lip-synching. The fabulous guys at Down Fenix Media (www.downfenix.com) roll two cameras and we go, mistakes and all. In a world of over-produced music, I'm wanting to offer authenticity not just for music lovers but for myself because I've found it's easier to be creative when I let it all hang-out - good, bad, and ugly - at least it's real.

Tom Petty's a Badass and Other Things I've Learned From My YouTube Channel

This year, I have indulged myself with a project called "Soundtrack of My Life." Each week I release on YouTube a story and a song that has special meaning to me. I have fantasized about doing a project like this for years but always worried that releasing covers would detract from my cool singer-songwriter vibe (I try so hard to create). However, I realized that no one who knows me actually thinks I'm cool and my two kids  keep me one step away from wearing mom jeans (not cool!) so really, I had nothing to lose. Thanks to the help of the amazing guys at Down Fenix Media, I was off practicing some covers and ready to go. Here's what I've learned so far from my YouTube channel.

Tom Petty is a bad ass. Which of course, we already knew. But, my YouTube channel has confirmed it for me. I picked his song "Yer So Bad" because he's one of my favorite artists and the song is short and sweet. I thought it would be a good introduction to the channel for people who were just getting a taste of what Soundtrack of My Life was all about. It averages the most plays per week and it's my most viewed video. Yer So Bad isn't exactly his biggest hit so I think on sheer name recognition, people trust it's gonna be a good song. Listen here and tell me what you think in the comments! I respond to all comments. Even haters!

March's most popular video is my Call Me Maybe version (which I love!). I had to make my own version because my kids sang it non-stop. I really like how the singer-songwriter vibe puts a spin on it. And while Call Me Maybe quickly jumped over INXS and Marcy Playground, Tom Petty is still firmly in the second place spot for the month and #1 overall.  The logical explanation is the people who listened to me cover Carly Rae, stuck around to hear Tom Petty. Crossing generations and genres like that is any musicians dream and it just makes me love him even more. Listen here and tell me what you think about this slower version of Call Me Maybe.

I have  discovered that I am the only person who listened to Concrete Blonde in the '90s. Nobody knows who they are. Not even people my age. Really??? Have we forgotten Joey? As a female artist who loves to belt moody songs there was nothing better than the album Bloodletting. And that album came out before vampires were cool --- so they get double awesome points for being ahead of the trend. The song I picked, Tomorrow Wendy, is hands down one of my favorite songs of all time. I was sure that when I posted it  I would be overrun with emails and Facebook messages telling me how much people love that song. But nope. All I got is one girl named Wendy telling me that the song disturbed her. Point taken. Let me hear from you if you love the beauty of this song!
And lastly, I have realized that a lot of people hate Marcy Playground's Sex and Candy. HATE.Even on the day I was filming, as soon as I said  it, one of the producers groaned with disgust. It had never occurred to me that someone wouldn't like that song - it's short, it's simple, and it mentions sex and candy ..... ummmmm, how does it get much better than that? When I posted the song, appropriately during the week of  Valentine's Day, people emailed  to tell me how much they hated that song. Who does that?  "Hey, what's up? I hate what you're doing. See ya!"  At first I wasn't sure what I thought about those emails but I've decided those folks can suck it. I still love that song, and I like my version of it. Check it out here and see what you think. I also think the moodier lighting works for this particular song.

I could go on and on about the other songs and maybe I will in another blog. For now, I will close by saying this has been a really fun project to work on. Music really does bring people together and it's amazing how many conversations I've had with friends, neighbors, or other parents that started because they liked a song I posted. I appreciate all the support I've received so far, especially from my intown friends and neighbors. Please help support this project by subscribing to my channel so you can get videos in your inbox on a weekly basis. Also, share them with your friends, on your facebook page or on Twitter. Sharing just one video with your friends can introduce me to a whole group of fans I would never have known otherwise. Your friends will thank you and so will I. And don't forget - Tom Petty's legacy is in your hands. Subscribe here! Join my newsletter here!

Week #11, Harlem Shake, Pearson Perry (kids)

Hi! Welcome to my project "Soundtrack of My Life" where each week I share a song and a story with my audience. Here's this week's cover --- our own version of the Harlem Shake.

Super friend & fan Brad H. requested a Pearson Perry family version of the Harlem Shake on my Facebook fan page a few weeks ago. I fully intended to honor that request but my kids beat me to it.  My 9 year old (budding filmmaker) filmed this video of his 5 year old sister while we driving. He then edited it with an app while still in the car. I had no idea they were filming a Harlem Shake, I just thought they were entertaining each other. Obviously, there were! I absolutely love their childlike version of it and I hope you enjoy this version as much as I do. Likes, shares, comments and subscriptions are always appreciated!

Big Love - Pearson Perry

Soundtrack of My Life Video #2 is LIVE

Exciting news! Video #2 for Soundtrack of My Life is live.

This was a fun song to do because the way you hear it on the radio makes it sound like it's an uptempo, happy, romantic song. When I started studying the song, I realized the song wasn't what  I thought it was about at all. So, to highlight the lyrics, I stripped it down. Let me know what you think. Hope you love it as much as I do. Please feel free to share, like and comment. I appreciate the support! And don't forget to get on my mailing list at www.pearsonperrymusic.com so you can keep up with my creative journey.

Pearson Perry Launches Passion Project Entitled “Soundtrack of My Life”

Atlanta, GA - Claire “Pearson” Perry,  founder of Atlanta Intown Songwriters,  launches her passion project “Soundtrack of My Life” on YouTube Saturday, January 5, 2013. The project is a twist on how current indie artists build their fan base by covering today’s  hit songs and being discovered by YouTube searches - a la Bieber style.

Instead of covering current hits, each week she will invite music lovers into her world by performing a cover song with special meaning to her. Each song has a story that accompanies it, allowing viewers to not only enjoy an old favorite, but also connect with Perry in a more intimate way.

Intimacy is something that Perry excels at. Her vocal style and rustic guitar playing are highly emotive. She strives for authenticity in her performances over technical perfection, and as a result, she exposes a raw vulnerability that is magnetic. “I love a well-produced song. But I also enjoy the honesty of a performance before it is cleaned up. I like things a little messy,” says Perry. In fact, she has taken a real risk with this project by almost guaranteeing imperfection. Each song is filmed live, with two cameras rolling. Many songs were filmed with one take.

Most artists would have chosen to record the tracks and then lip-synch to ensure control of the product and Perry considered that option. “For me, there’s a thrill in the risk of live music and this was as close as I could come to giving viewers “live” music. I’m okay with taking that risk and I think fans of indie artists will appreciate it.”

Perry says that until now she wasn’t sure how to effectively use YouTube. “I tried to promote original music but covers appeal to YouTube viewers more. I have never performed covers so it didn’t seem like a viable format for me. This project has really captured my attention because I can be authentic and use technology in a way that can attract new fans. And I’m learning songs I love to sing.”

Subscribers of her YouTube channel will receive automatic updates when a new video is released. Go to https://www.youtube.com/user/pearsonperrypeople to subscribe. You can learn more about Pearson Perry at www.pearsonperrymusic.com and “like” her Facebook Pearson Perry fan page.

This project was made possible by the fabulous guys at Down Fenix Media, LLC. Big hugs and thank yous to: Matthew Mandarano, Cinematographer, Jon Fredette, Sound Designer and Patrick Griffin, Producer.
